Wayans' to Try an Animated 'Thug' Life

Keenen Ivory, Shawn and Marlon Wayans are bringing their humor to Nicktoons as the kids channel has picked up the brothers' first animated project, a series of specials titled "Thugaboo."

You heard it right, "Thugaboo". The comedy special will look at the trials and tribulations of nine very different kids growing up in the inner city.
Through their series of misadventures, the kids learn valuable lessons about everything from the importance of friendship to never giving up on a dream.

After reading the article, I know what the original intention and heart of the show is. In fact, Shawn Wayans said he and his brothers had wanted for some time to do a cartoon for kids that was based on some of the experiences they had as kids, envisioning that project as a "throwback" to the cartoons they watched growing up, such as the "Peanuts" and "Fat Albert" shows.

What I am struggling with is the name of the show, you know a name means everything. Webster dictionary defines thug as a brutal ruffian or assassin : Gangster, Killer. Gangster means a member of a gang of criminals. Killer means: one that kills: one that has a forceful, violent, or striking impact b : one that is extremely difficult to deal with. I am not going to confess that over my child or allow them to call someone else that name. We already hear people calling children "Baa Baa kids", which carries a negative connotation.

And what is a boo? Well I looked that up. Boo means, a shout of disapproval or contempt: any sound at all -- usually used in negative constructions. Can you believe this? There is absolutely nothing positive about the name of this show.

"Thugaboo" will feature characters of "all different sizes, shapes, races and colors" and will be aimed at the network's target demo of kids 6-14. Does this mean that all inner-city kids are "Thugaboo's" or should now be called Thugaboo's. This is one show my children will not be watching. I don't care if it the funniest show on television and has the best story-lines.

On another note, please stop calling each other DIVA. Please look up the word.

STUDENT PROTEST R. KELLY CONCERT:

AUSTIN, Texas -- "This is ladies' night for me," R. Kelly said early in his performance at the University of Texas' Bass Concert Hall on Friday, the seventh stop on his Light It Up Tour.

Once the self-proclaimed "Pied Piper of R&B," now billing himself as "Mr. Showbiz," the Chicago superstar was in his suave lothario mode when he made that declaration of love to the women in the nearly sold-out 2,800-seat venue.

Sexual metaphors

But it wasn't long before the singer was tossing out odd sexual metaphors while performing "Sex in the Kitchen" and "The Jungle"; slapping an imaginary lover and feigning rough sex with her, or pretending to be wracked by an orgasm so intense that he passed out and had to be carried from the stage.

"They told me to contain myself, and 'no touching yourself there,' " Kelly said as he pointed to his groin. "But I know you want me to be myself and do my show."

By the standards of many R&B tours, which are often rated R, or Kelly's past excursions, which have been strictly NC-17, this was PG-13 stuff. Yet as he awaits trial, it is difficult to separate anything this artist does from the charges against him.

The Sun-Times has reported that Kelly has used his position of fame and influence as a pop star to have sexual relationships with underage girls. In June 2002, he was indicted on charges of child pornography after the newspaper received a videotape that prosecutors say shows him having sex with a 14-year-old girl.

Ladies Speak Up!

Concertgoers were reminded of this controversy as they filed into the venue.

"We love R&B, not child pornography," chanted 15 members of a group called Feminists of Color United. The UT students also handed out leaflets listing the charges against Kelly and statistics for sexual assaults against women of color.

"His arrogance isn't wasted on us -- that he's touring and singing about sex while these charges are unresolved," said Courtney Desiree Morris, a graduate student in anthropology who led the protest.

The student organization Feminists of Color United says the main purpose of their planned rally outside Bass Concert Hall is to raise awareness of sexual violence against women of color.

"We're students on this campus and we feel that we would like the university to more carefully scrutinize the people that they bring to campus," Jacqueline Smith of Feminists of Color United said.

Kelly, currently awaiting trial for 14 counts relating to child pornography, is scheduled to hit the stage at 8 p.m. Friday (March 17).

Explaining Kelly’s booking, Performing Arts Center Assistant Director Tim Neece said: "The University of Texas performing arts center is striving to bring the best in art and music in all genres and we're working hard to broaden our audiences and diversify our programming to do that."

UGN readers, please pray that more women stand up and take notice against any artist that attempts to degrade, offend and destroy the respect that all women deserve. I applaud these woman for their efforts and hope that more Christian and non-Christian university and college organizations band to have their voices heard.

Rapper Kanye West heads to the big screen

Rapper Kanye West is bringing his music - and his big head - to the big screen.

Why the term big head? Well in January, he was featured on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine with a crown of thorns atop his head, posing as Jesus Christ. If this wasn't enough, the outspoken rapper defends his brash attitude inside the magazine's pages, and states "In America, they want you to accomplish these great feats, to pull off these David Copperfield-type stunts," he says. "You want me to be great, but you don't ever want me to say I'm great?"

West has always been forthright in saying what he feels, most famously when he said "George Bush doesn't care about black people" during a telethon for Hurricane Katrina victims.

"If I was more complacent and I let things slide, my life would be easier, but you all wouldn't be as entertained," he says. "My misery is your pleasure."

The Grammy-winning West has joined with New Line Cinema and the production company Anonymous Content to develop a film inspired by his music, New Line announced Wednesday.

West will also appear in the film, a multi-perspective look at life in America through the eyes of West and various writers and directors.

The untitled project will "synthesize (West's) vision with a fantastic group of filmmakers to create what will be a one-of-a-kind film experience," said producer Richard Brown.

We can only expect that whatever this project is - Kanye West will try to make it more outrageous and cutting-edge than any reality show today.

I ask UGN readers to please pray for this man and the renewal of his mind. Proverbs 11:2 says, "When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. says, pride comes before destruction". (NIV)

GIRL, PUT SOME CLOTHES ON!

Toni Braxton had a near wardrobe malfunction during her concert Friday (March 10) in Atlantic City. According to the Associated Press, the singer was about to take the stage wearing only her dress and pantyhose. It seems the singer completely forgot to put on her panties. Fortunately, someone back stage took notice just in time and was able to call her back.

A wife of noble character who can find?  She is worth far more than rubies. She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her.

(Proverbs 31:10, 25 & 28)

Would somebody please tell Toni Braxton that she is a married women with two children (boys for that matter) and these types of clothing should only be worn in the confines of her own home - not on national television.

Daman Wayans' Attempt to trademark - NIGGA

Insult to All Self-Respecting African Americans

As a comedian and actor Daman Wayans is extremely funny. I remember watching him on In Living Color - he was and still is hilarious. However and unfortunately, for the past 14 months Daman Wayans has been trying to trademark the term "Nigga" for a clothing line and retail store and so far his application is being denied

Come on Daman -- that's not funny. Let's just suppose you were granted the right to use "Nigga" as the trademark and brand name for your new clothing line and retail shop. Let's paint this scenario: I'm taking my son shopping and looks into the window of your shop and say's, "Mommy, can I get those pants? What's the name of that store? My reply to this innocent little boy is, "No baby you can't have those pants, that's Nigga's clothes." Or perhaps I made a purchase from your store and my Grandmother says to me, "That's a pretty outfit, where did you pick that up?". "Oh Granny, I bought it at the Nigga Store."

Come on. Okay, but you are saying, "The N-word, everyone knows it. And most of us use it. I have to shamefully admit, I have used it before, joking around with a few of my girlfriends (you know who you are).

DamonWayons

The problem with this word is that it is derogatory and unfortunately has become a part of our culture. Because of rhw explosive use of the word on hip=hop CD's and videos, the green light has officially been given to other races to freely use the word...and they do. And it's not funny anymore.

So what do we do? Let's stop the madness now and strip this word from our vocabulary - immediately! Stop it. Right now. Not another day. I'm not joking!
